Sunday turned out another great event to honor the memory of Frankie Rizzo and to raise some money for his Scholarship fund. Once again, the Kings Park-Commack alumni battled the NY Islander alumni on the Ice at Superior Ice Rink in Kings Park (my old stomping ground when I played!). A Couple hundred fans were on hand to witness the action and see Frankie’s jersey, number-68, retired…

Below are a few shots from the day… more to come.

The Rizzo’s beneath Frankie’s retired number 68. It’ll forever hang from the ceiling of Superior…

Henri Cartier-Bresson spoke, wrote and photographed “peak action” shots. To him, photography was invented to capture “peak action” the moment a photograph bursts from a 2D image to something that expresses intent and purpose.

It’s soccer season again, and my youngest is turning out to be quite the goalie. Fearless, is how I would describe him- and gutsy… good goalies always fascinate me- to sacrifice their bodies like they do… I think their nuts

Love this shot of Aidan making this save… peak action indeed. Eyes closed, faced grimacing… an expression of intent and purpose. Love him.

Spanning the headlands of San Francisco, its brilliant red paint set afire a the sun creeps over the eastern horizon. Wish I had some fog across the water, but I love the colors of the dawn sky and the bridge itself.

Few words to write today… Just some images taken from an impromptou memorial in memory of Billy Grieco.

Family, friends and classmates at Commack High School turned a paddleball court at his elementary school into an emotional testament to his life, filling it with remembrances, pictures and sorrow-filled words. I hope these images capture the spirit of the place, and the memory of a very-loved person… who left us all, way to soon.

Not many people run around screaming “My ring flash arrived” but I do. Was pretty excited to play with this new gadget for my portraits. For you David Hobby followers, he uses the ring flash as a great fill light when shooting his images. Figured I would like to try some of that, in addition to the more “dramatic” ring flash look that adorns many fashion magazine covers… By the way if you click on the second image below and blow it up, you’ll see the tell-tale “catch-light” in Aidan’s eyes.. Yup, it’s a ringflash.

My experimentation victim of course ends up being one of my poor sons. This time it was Aidan’s turn, and I find it mildly amusing that he was pretty into playing model for me (and he did an awesome job). Just walked around the flash – D3, Orbis Flash Ring connected via an SC-29 synch cable. The getup is definitely a bit unwieldy and will take some getting used to. You can’t focus while youa re holding the contraption in your hand. You have to focus first, then hold camera in one hand, and the ring flash in the other. You absolutely look like a goofball when doing this (a word to the wise…), although being a photographer, you sorta get used to being a goofball (ever walk around a party with a Gary Fong flash modifier

So here are the first shots with the Orbis Ring Flash. Lots to play with and learn… Looking forward to experimenting with this and seeing where it can take my images…

Enjoy!

The St. James CYO Basketball season came to an end tonight. It’s been a great season- starting in October, this team of boys came together to play hard and have fun. Tristan has turned into a full on Knicks fan, and practices for hours outside on the sportscourt (even on those cold days of winter). Brought the camera to the last few games. Horrible light in these gyms, just God-awful, horrible…(I thank god for f2.8, ISO 1600-2200, and noise reduction software )

But managed a few “good” snaps to capture the spirit of the game.

Been hankering to get the camera back in hand lately… been too long since I felt the D3′s heft in my hand, and my finger on the shutter. Came across Ed Knepley’s blog this am and was reading and admiring some of his multiple exposure zoom photography.

You can imagine what happened next…

It’s snowing here on Long Island today. Thought I’d give this “multiple exposure” thing a shot and see how it works. In the camera menu I set the machine to “multiple exposures”- set the number of exposures to 10 and let it fly. Once you set this the camera will merge all ten frames within its brain, and present a final image on the viewfinder. Lots of opportunity to be creative here.

Heading outside to the backyard, just wandered about looking for some objects which might peak my interest to attempt this multiple exposuring “thing”… The trees with snow, a still green bush snow covered top, water drops on the edge of some white pines… As usual, once you let your mind wander a bit, the creative button gets pressed. And since you don’t really know what’s going to happen, you just gotta try.

Christmas Eve is always a special night. The family gathers and Santa visits, and the youngest generation just goes nuts. This is a quick snap of Baby “B” with Santa… he’s about to tear into his present.

Finished this a bit heavy (more “HDR-like”), wanted to capture some of that magic feeling of the Holiday. Hope yours was as good as Baby “B’s”… filled with M&M’s
